Introduction

This worksheet provides structured horizontal subtraction practice using a fixed (chosen) one- or two-digit subtrahend. Each problem is designed to strengthen mental subtraction skills through repeated and focused practice.

Understanding the Chosen Subtrahend Format

In this worksheet, one number remains constant across all problems: the chosen subtrahend. This fixed value is subtracted from a series of randomly generated numbers called minuends.

The chosen subtrahend can range from 2 to 35, allowing learners to deeply explore subtraction patterns and build familiarity with a specific number.

Configurable Minuend Difficulty Levels

This is a fully configurable, online subtraction worksheet that allows you to control the difficulty by selecting the range of the random minuends.

  • Level 1: Minuends from 2 to 19
  • Level 2: Minuends from 22 to 49
  • Level 3: Minuends from 52 to 99
  • All Levels: A mixed range covering all values

To ensure all results remain non-negative, the minuend and subtrahend are automatically swapped whenever the subtrahend is greater than the minuend.

Mathematical Terms Used

Minuend − Subtrahend = Difference

In a subtraction expression such as a − b = c:

  • Minuend (a): The starting number from which another value is subtracted
  • Subtrahend (b): The number being subtracted
  • Difference (c): The result of the subtraction
