The detailed description of the worksheet
Introduction
This worksheet provides structured practice in vertical subtraction using multi-digit numbers. Both the minuend and the subtrahend may contain multiple digits, making this worksheet ideal for developing accuracy and confidence with traditional written subtraction.
Understanding Vertical Subtraction
Each problem is presented in a vertical format with two rows. The top row represents the minuend, and the second row represents the subtrahend.
Subtraction is carried out column by column, starting from the rightmost digit and moving toward the left. This right-to-left approach reinforces correct place-value alignment and disciplined calculation.
Vertical subtraction, column subtraction, and long subtraction are different names for the same subtraction method.
Configurable Worksheet Options
This is a configurable, online subtraction worksheet that allows you to adjust the difficulty based on your learning needs.
- Select the number of digits for the minuend, up to 8 digits
- Turn on the option No Regrouping (No Borrowing or Exchanging) to practice subtraction problems without borrowing or exchanging.
- Choose whether the subtrahend has the same number of digits as the minuend or fewer digits
- Choose to exclude the 1s or 0s from both the minuend and the subtrahend

Right-to-Left Subtraction Process
To solve each vertical subtraction problem, follow a systematic approach.
- Begin with the rightmost column (ones place)
- Subtract the bottom digit from the top digit
- Apply borrowing (regrouping) if the top digit is smaller
- Move one column to the left and continue
- Proceed until all digits have been subtracted
Regrouping (Borrowing) in Vertical Subtraction
Regrouping, also known as borrowing or exchanging, is an important skill in column/vertical subtraction. It is required when a digit in the minuend is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend. In such cases, a value is borrowed from the next higher place value and added to the current digit before performing the subtraction. This worksheet allows you to practice subtraction problems with regrouping as well as no-regrouping problems, helping students gradually build confidence and accuracy with multi-digit subtraction. By controlling the regrouping option, learners can focus on the specific level of difficulty that best matches their current understanding.
