Introduction

Understanding Vertical Subtraction

Right-to-Left Subtraction Process

To solve each vertical subtraction problem, follow a systematic approach.

  1. Begin with the rightmost column (ones place)
  2. Subtract the bottom digit from the top digit
  3. Apply borrowing (regrouping) if the top digit is smaller
  4. Move one column to the left and continue
  5. Proceed until all digits have been subtracted

Regrouping (Borrowing) in Vertical Subtraction

Regrouping, also known as borrowing or exchanging, is an important skill in column/vertical subtraction. It is required when a digit in the minuend is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend. In such cases, a value is borrowed from the next higher place value and added to the current digit before performing the subtraction. This worksheet allows you to practice subtraction problems with regrouping as well as no-regrouping problems, helping students gradually build confidence and accuracy with multi-digit subtraction.
