What is Long Multiplication?

Long multiplication is a step-by-step method used to multiply larger numbers by breaking the calculation into smaller, manageable parts.

It is commonly used when multiplying:

  • Multi-digit integers
  • Decimal numbers
  • Larger values that are difficult to calculate mentally

In Long Multiplication, each digit of the multiplier is multiplied separately with the multiplicand. The partial products are then added together to get the final answer.

This method helps students understand place values and the structure of multiplication clearly.

Decimal Long Multiplication

Decimal long multiplication works almost the same way as multiplying whole numbers. The only extra step is placing the decimal point correctly in the final answer.

Rules for Decimal Long Multiplication

  1. Ignore the decimal points temporarily: Multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers.
  2. Count the total decimal places: Count how many digits appear after the decimal point in both numbers combined.
  3. Place the decimal point in the product: Starting from the right side of the answer, move the decimal point left by the total number of decimal places counted earlier.

Examples: Decimal Long Multiplication

1) Multiply 354.28 by 7.53

Other Names for Long Multiplication

Long multiplication is also commonly known as:

  • Column Multiplication
  • Standard Multiplication Method
  • Vertical Multiplication Method

In schools, the term Column Multiplication is very commonly used because the numbers are arranged vertically in columns according to place value.
