Introduction
Practise working with Roman numerals through a variety of interactive maths problems. This worksheet combines arithmetic, number comparison and ordering exercises to help you become more familiar with Roman numerals and their equivalent Arabic numbers.
What This Worksheet Covers
This interactive worksheet includes four distinct types of problems, allowing learners to practice Roman numerals from multiple perspectives.
1. Add Roman Numerals
Add two Roman numerals and express their sum in Roman numeral format. This exercise helps you practise addition while becoming familiar with the values and rules of Roman numeral notation.
2. Subtract Roman Numerals
Subtract one Roman numeral from another and express the difference in Roman numeral format. Practise subtraction and strengthen your understanding of how Roman numerals represent numerical values.
3. Find the Extremes
Given a list of Roman numerals, identify the greatest and smallest values. Enter both answers in Arabic number format. This exercise helps you compare Roman numerals and recognise their corresponding numerical values.
4. Sort the Roman Numerals
Arrange a given list of Roman numerals in the required numerical order and enter the answers in Arabic number format. This exercise develops your ability to interpret, compare and order Roman numerals.
Configurable Worksheet Options
This worksheet is fully configurable to suit different learning needs.
- Select number ranges such as up to 50, 51 to 1000, or any custom range in between
- Practice special year-based ranges from 1800 to 2035
- Choose the number of problems per question type: 12, 24, or 36
These options allow learners to tailor difficulty and volume for focused or extended practice.
Roman Numerals Cheat Sheet
The Roman numeral symbols and their values are:
- I1
- V5
- X10
- L50
- C100
- D500
- M1000
Addition & Repetition
When a symbol appears after a larger symbol, it is added to the larger symbol's value.
XV = 10 + 5 = 15
LIII = 50 + 3 = 53
If a symbol is repeated, the values are added together.
XXX = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30
CC = 100 + 100 = 200
Repetition Rules
The symbols I, X, C, and M can be repeated, but not more than three times in a row.
I, II, III, X, XX, XXX, C, CC, CCC, M, MM, MMM
IIII, CCCCC, MMMMM
The symbols V, L, and D are never repeated.
VV, LLL, DD
Subtraction
When a symbol appears before a larger symbol, it is subtracted from the larger symbol's value.
IV = 5 - 1 = 4
IX = 10 - 1 = 9
XL = 50 - 10 = 40
Then, why is 99 written as XCIX instead of IC? See next card.
IL ≠ 50 - 1 = 49
IC ≠ 100 - 1 = 99
IM ≠ 1000 - 1 = 999
Subtractive Combinations
The symbols I, X, and C can be used subtractively only in specific combinations:
This is why:
I can precede V and X.
49 = XLIX, not IL.
X can precede L and C.
99 = XCIX, not IC.
C can precede D and M.
999 = CMXCIX, not IM.
